Last firing of 2012

This stack of work has been drying out in the cellar, today I finished off the edges and they are now ready for a bisque firing before I add colour ... the really fun bit.

You may get a glimpse of some new heads I have been developing for an exhibition next year. I have been inspired by the Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani. I love the simplicity of his early 20th century portraits and I am combining that simplicity of form with the theme of cut flowers for an exhibition that I am very excited to be included in at Gallery 49 next year. I have a long way to go but I am pleased with progress so far. Fingers crossed on a good firing.

The colours used in this 1950's catalogue found in Janette Rays second hand book shop York, will definately have an influence over the treatment of colour on The Flower Heads.

Holmfirth Art Market

Good morning . After recovering from a very busy Art Market at the weekend I am now on with commissions for Christmas and orders . Some places have run out of my angels and fairies already ! Thought you may like to meet our cat Daisy, this is her sitting pretty at breakfast this morning

These are a couple of pictures of my stand at Holmfirth taken just after I had set up ready for the market to open .I have to thank my dear friend Lynne for all her help. I left the angels in her capable hands.

During the weekend I met lots of new talented artist's/makers, caught up with old friends and my family came along to which was so nice. Sold lots and made friends with new clients. It was a bit chilly but I soon forgot about that when I got into my gift wrapping mode.  I look forward to the next event.

Inspiration in May ( was in drafts so that's why it's posted in October !)

Been a while since I have been able to post on my blog, been a busy time with fulfilling orders, getting work ready for exhibitions in May and June and getting studio ready for North Yorkshire Open Studios which is currently underway.

I work in chaos, preparing colour palette for a piece called Emerging Colour now on show at Salt Box Gallery Helmsley, There is an image of this painting just started in a previous post.

May was very wet but brought with it a lush fresh greenness that I absolutely love . I took lots of photos for inspiration for colour and textural combinations for paintings.

I just love greens , every shade.

Autumn so that means Art Market

Its Autumn now and I have had a really busy summer supplying my stockists and working on new collections for exhibitions in galleries around the country . Wish I could have found time to share what I have been up to but its just impossible to do everything . Anyway just taking a small breather before I pack up my new collection for The Art Market at Holmfirth in November. This is a lovely event that I have shown at twice before. This year they are doing a special preview evening on Saturday, think it will be a great festive atmosphere for early Christmas buyers. I will be showing my new limited edition gift packs of cards with a little extra something. I have been working on more shadow boxes and made a much larger piece that I am going to display next weekend.

New Work ...

Today I have been getting together a group of work to send to the Old Chapel Gallery in Hereford for an exhibition that celebrates the Hay Festival at the end of this month.

This is the choas of my collection of driftwood, well some of it . I store some of it in the garage or boiler cuboard to dry out throughly before using. My studio floor often resembles a ship wreck washed ashore.

These are some of today's finished pieces for Hereford, I have used some vintage text from Shakespeare ... My bounty is as boundless as the sea (Romeo and Juliette).  I have combed car boots and second hand shops for interesting old books and maps. I have a huge collection of maps so can work to a commission for any location in the UK. I like making my pieces very individual for a gallery by using maps of their location .

Hello

This is my first time blogging, I have been encouraged to so by lovely people that  think I should share my creative progress.  Primarily I want to share the processes and involvement of my creative work here in my studio located on the East coast, a mile from the sea near the eclectic, creative town of Scarborough. So I thought I would start in sharing with you glimpses of my studio and the work I produce.

Feather collection ... bought, given and foraged from road kill. Its lovely when people leave them stuck my gate post for me.

Work in progress ... as you can see I use turquoise somewhere in every piece i do. Can't help it, Its a compulsion.

New painting started yesterday, I have about six canvases on the go at once. I am inspired by texture, colour combinations and patterns in my garden and surrounding countryside.

Little Hare Balancing Bird :This piece has just been delivered to Gallery 49 in Bridlington for their Menagerie show starting next weekend for more info click on .http://galleryforty-nine.com/events.php.
It is a small sculpture hand built in earthenware, mounted onto driftwood.

If you would like to see more of my work I am continuing to regularly up date my website www.shirleyvauvelle.co.uk
